Dear Dr. Mimi: Technostress

Dear Dr. Mimi,

I know that all of this new technology is helping us do our jobs more efficiently, but I have such a hard time with all of the new technology that I actually do not think it is helping me work more efficiently.  I feel like I spend most of my time trying to catch up on the latest thing so that I can get my job done.  It is really starting to stress me out!! What do you recommend?

Sincerely,

Technology crazy

Dear Technology Crazy,

What you are referring to is actually called technostress.  Technostress is a term that was coined by clinical psychologist Craig Brod.  Technology places a lot of stress on the user to relearn tasks, troubleshoot problems, and get comfortable with new systems.  Understanding what causes technostress and knowing what to do to beat it is very important.   You must realize that technostress cannot be completely avoided.  Below are ten of the best ways to beat technostress.

  1. Accept that a certain amount of technology-driven aggravation is inevitable.
  2. Know your equipment and how it works
  3. Don’t multitask all the time, especially when preparing for a presentation.
  4. Make sure you have the equipment you need, and that it works properly.
  5. Beware of other, “better” systems, until they’re actually proven to be better.
  6. Insofar as possible, rehearse with all of the equipment you will be using in your presentation.
  7. Encourage and ask for proper training in the use of new technology.
  8. Keep it simple:  Don’t over-design presentations or get to wrapped up in bells and whistles.  Keep things classy and understated.
  9. Have a backup plan for technical failures
  10. Don’t be afraid to just talk.  Remember, communication is about people, not technology.
