What Your Boss Expects: The Basics

We have done a lot of work with “Bosses” and have discovered what are the basic things that bosses want from their employees.

  1. Knowledge. You don’t have to be a pro at everything, but you do need a specific area of knowledge that your boss values. Also your boss needs to know what you know, so don’t be afraid to share your  knowledge and expertise. Bosses need people who develop a unique expertise and are willing to continue to learn and grow.
  2. Credibility. If you want your boss to trust you, your word has to carry weight. Follow through on assignments and do what you say you’re going to do. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance.  Write down what you have been told so you do not have to ask the same questions repeatedly.  Bosses are willing to train if you are willing to learn.
  3. Professionalism. Bosses appreciate individuals who are serious about what they do and willing to take the time to achieve a deep understanding of their job and how it fits into the organization. They also expect your conduct, language and  dress to be appropriate for the position.  One of the greatest complaints we here are about people who arrive late or leave early.
  4. Ethical. Do the right thing! The test of ethics is doing the right thing even when it’s unpopular or uncomfortable.  Bosses want you to be honest and look out for the best interests of the organization.  If you always agree with your boss, most bosses will stop asking your opinion.  (By the way, if you always disagree, they will stop asking also!)

Caring. Bosses value relationships with direct reports who care about them. Show that you’re truly concerned about what the boss has to say by responding with solutions rather than complaints or excuses.
